Ok, this post might be super boring for some of you, but it recently came to my attention that there is some debate out there on the new Common Core Curriculum! I'd like to share just one example of why, as a teacher, I LOVE the new Common Core curriculum! As you all know, a HUGE unit in 5th grade is persuasive writing, as they are tested state-wide on a persuasive essay.
Here is what the Utah Core says regarding this very important standard:
Standard 8, Objective 6, indicator d: "Produce writing to persuade (e.g., essays, editorials, speeches, TV scripts, responses to various media)."
Here is what the Common Core Curriculum says for it:
"Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
a. Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which ideas are logically grouped to support the writer’s purpose.
b. Provide logically ordered reasons that are supported by facts and details.
c. Link opinion and reasons using words, phrases, and clauses (e.g., consequently, specifically).
d. Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented."
There have been so many times my co-workers and I have puzzled over what something in our previous curriculum exactly entailed. The Common Core provides wonderful added support for teachers, and consequently, clearer instruction for students! LOVE it!
